ABOUT US
Emergency preparedness and safety – the ocean's two great challenges
Zero dead seafarers. This has been both our and Norway's vision for ages, but we have not yet arrived there. Therefore, we must set even tougher demands, use the resources we can and use the simple and good solutions that already exist, to achieve the goal. In Norway, we rightly expect the state to take care of the safety and welfare of its citizens. On land, this is probably true, but at sea there is room for improvement, and the solution is simple: Use the help that competent business has to offer. Norway's sea area is five times larger than its land area, and it is obviously challenging to maintain sufficient monitoring while having the resources to handle potential incidents. Although the complexity is great, it is necessary to try to meet this challenge.

It's not enough
Unfortunately, the current situation indicates that not enough is being done. Compared to the preparedness on land, the picture becomes even clearer. The public preparedness at sea currently consists of 35 vessels. If we were to have the equiv alent preparedness on land, it would correspond to a total of only seven vehicles - three police cars, two fire trucks and two ambulances to cover the entire country. This comparison points to a clear gap in preparedness at sea, and it emphasizes the need for increased resources and measures. Considering Norway's significant maritime areas, it is necessary to invest in both monitoring systems and preparedness resources. It is high time to reconsider and strengthen the strategies for protecting our maritime areas.
